Urban Space Nightclub – The Urban Space Nightclub was a painting that I finished in 2005. I worked on this painting on and off during my last two years in college. Inspired by the artwork of genius futurist Syd Mead, I attempted to create a futuristic scene that showed how a club would look in space. This would be the last acrylic painting that I would ever paint. Although I painted with acrylics for over 20 years, the constant remixing of colors every time I wanted to continue working on a painting began to be too much. I switched to gouache paint about two years ago. For non artists who don’t know, an artist can spend about 5 times as much time mixing colors as he or she does actually painting. Everyone is different, but I spend about 1 minute painting for every minute I spend mixing colors. Because I draw with a brush (very rare), it means mixing the colors over and over every time I wanted to paint (with acrylics). With gouache paint, if I spend an hours mixing colors and get too tired to continue, I can still use the paint I mixed the next day and the day after that. All I have to do is add water and I can begin drawing (painting) with my brush.
